The Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), in a health alert issued on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, reported the existence of cases on national territory presenting signs and symptoms that could indicate the presence of anthrax.
People exhibiting signs similar to anthrax have been identified in the locality of Fort Royal, in the first communal section of Petit-Goâve, in the West department, the MSPP revealed in its note.
These individuals are believed to have contracted the disease after consuming meat from contaminated animals.
Following this discovery, the MSPP announced it has launched an investigation to better understand this suspected pathology in Haiti. “An epidemiological investigation is underway to identify the source of the infection, assess the extent, and implement appropriate prevention and control measures,” the ministry stated.
About Anthrax
Anthrax is a bacterial infection caused by Bacillus anthracis. It can affect humans through contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.
Among all its manifestations, the cutaneous form is the most common and generally presents as black, painless ulcers on the skin, the MSPP note specified.
How to Protect Yourself from Anthrax
To protect against the disease, the MSPP advises the population to follow these guidelines:
– Avoid any contact with animals that have died suddenly or are sick.
– If a person exhibits symptoms similar to those mentioned above or has been in contact with sick animals, they should immediately consult a healthcare professional.
– Report any suspected cases of anthrax to local health authorities so they can take the necessary measures.
The MSPP also recommends personal hygiene by advising citizens to regularly wash their hands with soap and water, especially after handling animals or animal products.
Farmers are encouraged to vaccinate their herds against anthrax, the MSPP recommends.
The Dominican Republic on Alert
Informed of the potential presence of anthrax in Haiti, the government of the Dominican Republic has been on alert since the beginning of the week to prevent a possible spread of the disease on its territory.
The Dominican Ministry of Defense stated that it maintains constant communication with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Accordingly, the neighboring state’s health authorities have developed a security protocol while conducting health checks. Epidemiological surveillance has also been intensified in the border area, according to Dominican media.
