The former U.S. envoy to Haiti, Daniel Foote, disapproved of the intervention of Dominican President Luis Abinader this week before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) around the serious political and socio-economic crisis that prevails in Haiti, believing that the Dominican head of state is not a friend of Haiti.
Luis Abinader encouraged the international community to take in hand the file of Haiti affirming that the situation that he assimilates has a “civil war of low intensity cannot wait any more”. He indicated that the Haitian crisis constitutes a threat for the Dominican Republic.
“Luis Abinader is not a friend of the poor in Haiti. His main priority is to keep Haitians out of the Dominican Republic while continuing to dump Dominican products in Haiti for profit,” said Daniel Foote.
The retired U.S. diplomat, who recalls serving in the Dominican Republic and says he has many contacts and friends in the Dominican government, warns that “if we let Abinader or Trujillo or any Dominican make the decisions for Haiti, it will fail just like if the Americans do it.
The former U.S. special envoy to Haiti said that the main response of the Dominican administration of Luis Abinader to the Haitian crisis was to build a wall. Daniel Foote “doesn’t think they [the Dominicans] have made much strategic progress since then, and they just want to build a wall and forget about the haze in Haiti and if they can get others to pay for an army to come in and kill a bunch of people.
