Haiti: Armed Attacks Target Diplomatic Vehicles

CTN News

A series of attacks by armed gangs occurred on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in the Cité Soleil area, specifically in Carrefour Vincent.

Among the targets were two consular vehicles. Five people were injured, and one person was killed.

The consular vehicles belonged to the diplomatic representative of India, Eddy Handal. The attack happened as the convoy was en route to the consul’s company in Sarthe.

Jenny Handal, the consul’s daughter, was among the victims, having been shot in the foot. The other injured individuals were employees of the company. According to available information, their injuries are not currently life-threatening.

An anonymous source disclosed that such incidents are not isolated. “In December, armed assailants intercepted a truck carrying goods and kidnapped its driver,” the source reported.

A vehicle belonging to the American Embassy in Haiti was also attacked by armed individuals the previous day, according to our sources. The incident occurred during a trip to the residences of American consuls posted in the country.

An embassy gardener was struck by gunfire and was quickly transported to a hospital for treatment. His condition remains unclear, and authorities from both countries have remained silent on the specifics of the incident.

These attacks highlight the growing climate of insecurity in Haiti, where armed gangs continue to terrorize the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.

While the Mission Multinationale de Soutien à la Sécurité (Multinational Security Support Mission) struggles to neutralize gang-controlled areas, these groups are intensifying their violent actions to assert their dominance.
