Flooding: Port-de-Paix Town Hall calls for emergency intervention by central government

CTN News

An emergency meeting was held at Port-de-Paix town hall on Tuesday, bringing together various institutions, including the Office of Social Affairs and Labor and the Social Economic Assistance Fund (FAES). The aim of the meeting was to examine the urgent measures to be taken following the heavy rains that recently hit the North-West department, and the town of Port-de-Paix in particular, causing the death of at least two children and destroying around a hundred homes.

Against this backdrop, Mayor Yanick Auguste Agenor stressed the need for the central government to pay special attention to Port-de-Paix. She called on the government to take swift and effective action to meet the urgent needs of the population affected by the bad weather. The tragic death of Ralph Henry in the city center was also deplored by the mayor.
The Mayor’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Chavane Lhérissé, informed that meetings are planned with several institutions and key players. These include departmental delegate Wisley Dordoille, the Direction de la Protection Civile (DPC), the Coordination Communale de la Protection Civile (CCPC), the Brigade DPC, the Red Cross and members of community organizations. The aim of these meetings is to discuss intervention measures to deal with the current situation and prevent similar incidents in the future.

In addition, a meeting is also scheduled with the Director of Public Works, Mr. Angelot Horacius, to coordinate efforts to rebuild and rehabilitate damaged infrastructure. Coordination with the Director of Public Works is also planned for street cleaning, re-establishing inter-communal communication routes in addition to the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructures.
These are mandatory measures that must be implemented rapidly to ensure the safety and well-being of the population of Port-de-Paix.
